Post Answer
I need advice for writing a 5 page essay on Anita Diamant's "The Red Tent."
How can I summarize the whole book in 5 paragraphs? Also, how to I cite my sources within the paper. (I do not own a credit card to pay anybody)
Answer There are two ways to site the book. First, the old fashioned way is you put a little raised number after the end of the sentence where you quoted from the book and then at the end of your paper you put your citation in this form:

1. Diamant, Anita, The Red Tent (Place of publication: Publisher, year copyrighted), page number.
2. Op. Cite., page number.
3. Op. Cite., page number.

Number your quotes in order. The copyright year is given on the first or second page of the book. Fill in the data, such as “page number.”

The second way is right after the mention of author, the book’s title, or a quotation you put (Diamant, year copyrighted, page number). Some forms don’t bother with the page number. Your teacher would have told you what system to use. You do this for every quote you use. Then at the endof your essay you put:

Diamant, Anita. The Red Tent. Place of publication: Publisher, year copyrighted.

That’s it for the citation. Just remember to puncutate the title. The title goes in italics or gets underlined. NO QUOTE MARKS!

For your summery, I haven’t read the book but here is an easy formula you can use for all book summaries:

Paragraph one:

Author’s book, Blah, is about [generically describe main character or characters such as: women in Biblical Israel] who [generically describe story: bond with each other during their menses when they are required to retreat to a red tent] because [generically say why they do what they do such as: because the red tent is one place they can be themselves in a male dominated society]. Make this at least 3 sentences long.

Paragraph two: Detail the main characters. Say who the protatogonist is (heroine or hero). Say who the antagonist is (bad guy). Say who helps who.

Paragraph three: Tell what major event happens at the beginning, something big that happens in the middle, what the climax is and how it ends.

Paragraph four: Tell why what happened happened.

Paragraph five: Recap, using adjectives and adverbs that show how you felt about the book. Recap like this: Why, in Author’s book, Blah, major event middle, climax, and falling action (after climax) happened to Major characters.
