During the Golden Age Rome was a very successful empire. There were advances in technology, philosophy, literature, theatre, and art. As the empire grew and went on for many centuries Rome was not always an ideal civilization. In 476 A.D. Rome began to fall due to one main factor. This main underlying cause was the poor political power which led to difficulty in choosing new emperors, social unrest, and barbarians.
During the Roman Empire there was poor leadership in the government. There were many ways the new emperors would be chosen. Either society would choose between many candidates or the throne would be sold to the highest bidder. If the society was to choose the emperor it was a choice between old emperors, the Senate, the army, and the Praetorian Guard which is an emperor’s private army. The problem with this along with buying the throne is the new emperor wouldn’t be the right person for the throne. In the Roman Empire corrupt officials would devise plans to enable their own wealth. Having corrupt officials didn’t help the Roman Empire succeed but did contribute to the empire decline.
During the decline in the Roman Empire, corrupt officials were not the only problem. There was drastic social unrest which was caused by the lacking political power. The rich were people who became rich off of the poor. To try and become richer, the poor began to start stealing just like the rich did at one point. If this method did not work most people would become unemployed. At this time there were 100,000 people who were in unemployment. Farmers, for example, could not stay as farmers because they could not compete with the slave owners. During this time taxes were too much for the poor to pay which led to a shift in tax burden which also led to decreased revenue for the government. This caused riots all over which was the main cause of social unrest among the empire. Social unrest was a result of the poor political power in the Roman Empire.
Defending one’s empire is very important in its rise and fall. The Roman Empire failed to do so at the start of the civil wars in Italy. When these civil wars arose the soldiers left their border to go fight. This led to Odovacar, the German general, overthrowing all the Roman emperors and making himself ruler. From then on Germanic tribal chiefs ruled all of the western part of the Empire. With more knowledge the soldiers would have known that this would happen and another ruler would come in and take over the empire. After Odovacar had taken over the cities began to decline and businesses disappeared which contributed to the collapse of the Roman Empire.
Rome ultimately fell in 476 A.D. and was caused by the lack of political power and had been going on for centuries. As an effect of this poor political power there was difficulty choosing new emperors, uncontrollable social unrest, and barbarians which eventually took over the whole Roman Empire for good. With better political power the Roman Empire could have lasted longer and could have been more successful than it was during its previous Golden Age.
