| Documents: Carl Schurz, Report on the Condition of the South (1865) and The Nation, "The State of the South" (1872). We have two documents here that discuss the problems of the South after the Civil War. The first is just before Reconstruction is put into place, the second halfway through. From these two, what seem to be the biggest problems facing the South? Do you think either of these two are biased in what they are saying? What solutions do you see for the South after the Civil War?
