To start off, mothers care about their children especially if they are heading off to college. They care about their children so much that they basically do everything for them. Thus, the children do not learn how to do anything since their parents are taking care of everything for them. They spoil the children and they treat them as if they are still growing up. But we all know when you are heading off to college; you have passed through the stage. In “Do 'Helicopter Moms' Do More Harm than Good?” the author, Helen Johnson, has made some excellent points about moms who do everything for their college age children. In fact when mothers try to do all the chores for their adult children they take away their child’s freedom, they make the child dependent on his parents rather than depending on himself, and they make the child irresponsible.
First of all, moms take away their children’s freedom when their children are at college. An example of this from the story is that the mom checks her children’s grades for them. This is not right at all, why would someone let their mom check their grades for them. The mom should not inform the child on his grade, the child should inform his mom on his grade. Another example is that the children should clean up their own dorms and not allow their mom to clean for them. How can someone who goes to college allow their mom go and clean up his house. It just means that the mother cares about her children that she takes over her children’s freedom by guiding them in everything they do.
Furthermore, moms also make the children depend on them rather than relying on themselves. An example of this would be wake-up calls. The children should depend on themselves rather than relying on their parents to wake them up for class. The children are at college and they still need their parents to wake them up. Might as well let their mom come and live with them. Another example is that the parent sends their children a to-do list. How can the children be able to do things on their own if they still need their parents behind their back? The mom is caring about her children so much that everything goes her way. The children cannot even make up their own decisions they need their mom to do it for them.
Lastly, moms make the child irresponsible. An example of this is would be the mom drives two hours just to clean their dishes and laundry. The children are supposed to be responsible enough to do things on their own and not let their mom do it for them. How will the children ever learn how to be responsible enough to do things on their own if they never get the chance to do anything? Another example is that their mom will go to their class and take notes for them if they are going to miss a couple weeks of class. That should not be the mom’s responsibility; it should be the children’s responsibility to ask their classmates what they missed while they were gone. We know that the children appreciate what their mother has done for them, but they should let their mother to their work for them, they should do their own work and only depend on themselves not others.
